So, my son and I took our first father son road trip. Last Friday we rented a car and headed down to Panama City Beach. The trip is around 7 hours from our house so we wanted to get started early in the day. We hit a snag in the initial start time and it ended up putting us behind about 4 hours when it was finally worked out but we were off. Now, if we were riding with the entire family there would be radio and fights over the radio the entire trip…..we NEVER once turned the radio on as we were driving down. We talked a little, we would sing crazy made up songs, made horrible noises, and just cut up all the way down….IT WAS HILARIOUS!!! So much fun on the drive.
When we finally got to our destination, I ran inside to check in. It was getting late because of our late start but we were both pretty hungry. We ran across the street from the hotel to a place that has been there for years Sharkey’s. This place is a restaurant bar and grill type place with live music right on the beach. It is funny because it is also used as a church on Sunday mornings. Kind of odd but who am I to judge anyone else. Gabriel was really excited to be there and just didn’t want to go back to the hotel just yet. I did convince him because we had our deep sea fishing trip early the next morning.
We woke up early the next morning and headed to Captain Anderson’s Marina for our 6 hour trip. We got on the boat and found our fishing spots rather quickly and settled in for our hour and forty five minute cruise out to the fishing spot. On the trip out, the deckhand started showing us how to use the rod and reel and also told us about the squid that we were going to use for bait. I loved the look on Gabriel’s face when he saw it and knew that he was going to have to put his hands in that crap.Turns out he was a trooper. He did poke his finger with the hook first thing but once was all that it took to learn how to avoid it in the future. We finally dropped our lines and started fishing. Now I have been on these trips before and have caught several fish. Gabriel has never caught a fish. We have gone fishing at home in the river but didn’t have any luck that time. Well, Gabe caught a fish and then he caught 4 more. almost before I caught 1. He snagged a Trigger fish as his second catch and you would have thought he caught Jaws the way he was fighting…..GO GET EM GABRIEL!!!! THAT’S MY BOY!!! What a great time out there on the water.
After we got back to the hotel, I wanted to rest a few minutes before we went swimming in the Gulf but Gabe had other plans. He let me rest about 30 minutes and then we were in the water swimming. We stayed in there for about 3 hours straight laughing and carrying on. I was starting to wrinkle from the water so I begged to get out and he wasn’t having it…….UNTIL……POP,POP,POP!!! I told him that a fish just hit my back 3 times in a row. About that time, one popped him and it was time to go!!! It was so funny!!
We headed back to the hotel for showers and then ran up the street to Hooter’s for dinner. It was Gabe’s first time in a Hooter’s and he was excited to say the least. We sat down at our table and Gabriel ordered a huge Double hamburger and fries…I let him order it but I knew that it would be mine at the end of the meal. He was really more thirsty and ran our waitress to death on refills. Anyway, as we finished up, a few of the waitresses got him up for a picture with them. He turned bright red but he was a trooper.
The next day we packed up our bags and headed back to Tennessee. Again, we hardly listened to the radio but had a blast doing all the crazy stuff that we do. I had a great time and I know that Gabriel did as well. There is nothing like that quality time and the memories that we will have from that experience together. I look forward to many more like it in the future.
Now it’s time to plan a daddy daughter trip. Any Suggestions?
